Board of Directors
The Board of Directors is the decision making and policy-setting body of Waterville Area HFH. It sets financial goals and priorities, manages legal matters, and communicates with Habitat for Humanity International (HFHI) as well as the Regional Support Center. Board members, elected at the affiliate's annual meeting in May, agree to serve two-year terms. Board members attend regular monthly meetings, and most serve on at least one other committee. The Board elects an affiliate President, Vice-President, Secretary, and Treasurer on an annual basis.
Nominating Committee
The Nominating Committee has the ongoing responsibility for recruiting and training new candidates for the Board of Directors and the various committees. Bringing new people into the organization is critical to the long-term success of WAHFH.
Communications
The Communications Committee publishes periodic newsletters, maintains a website, communicates with the media, and manages the public image of WAHFH. This committee needs people with writing skills, computer skills, printing equipment, or photography experience.
Faith Relations
Waterville Area HFH relies on faith communities for much of its support. The Faith Relations Committee works to develop and nurture covenent partnerships with local congregations. Each September, the committee coordinates Building on Faith Week and the International Day of Prayer and Action. Members should be willing to approach their own congregations as well as those of other faith communities to explain the mission of WAHFH and to solicit support.
Development and Fund Raising
The Development Committee implements the fund-raising policies and goals of the Board of Directors by developing a strategic plan for soliciting donations of money, materials, and professional services. The committee works closely with prospective donors, who must be informed about the work of WAHFH before they are willing to invest. Development efforts are multi-faceted and include public campaigns, partnerships with local businesses, and special events.
Site Selection
The Site Selection Committee identifies and evalutes potential building sites for WAHFH homes. The committee works closely with individuals and municipalities to solicit donations of appropriate sites. This committee needs people with flexible schedules and experience in real estate, construction, and affordable housing.
Construction
The Construction (a.k.a. Building) Committee acts as the general contractor for the affiliate. The committee creates plans and specifications for WAHFH houses, and manages all phases of construction, including scheduling, materials procurement, and coordination of volunteer and professional labor. Members do not have to be construction professionals, but construction, management, or supervisory experience is desirable.
Family Selection
The Family Selection Committee evaluates applications for WAHFH houses and selects (with the approval of the Board of Directors) WAHFH Partner Families. Choosing a Partner Family is a multi-step process which must be fair, objective, and nondiscriminatory. Careful selection of appropriate Partner Families is critical to the success of both the choosen families and WAHFH.
Family Support
Waterville Area HFH is committed to the success of its Partner Families. The Family Support Committee serves as a liaison between WAHFH and its partner families both during construction and after the family takes possession of the house. The committee may provide individualized financial counseling, training in basic home maintenance, or other services as needed. The committee also provides important feedback to WAHFH as part of the continuing effort to review and refine our policies.
Volunteer
The Volunteer Committee recruits, retains, and recognizes WAHFH volunteers. Responsibilities include organizing volunteer orientations, soliciting volunteers for work days, coodinating meals and hospitality at the work site, and planning volunteer appreciation events. This committee must remain in close contact with volunteers via phone and email.
